Relationship Marketing Stinks

Mike said to me, “I want you to teach me how to use the internet to grow my business so I don’t have to talk to people.  I want to get so good at SEO, Pay-per-click, and Social Media so that I don’t have to try to talk anyone into joining my business…and I don’t want to call all my family and friends either.”

“Where do I start?”  I thought. 

“Okay Mike.  Here is the thing.  It is a very, very, very rare person that is able to build a massive business without having to talk to people.  Many of the internet marketing methods I can teach you are meant to have your phone ring more, not less.”

With a confused look on his face Mike turned his head to the side like a confused dog and said, “Rut-Row.”

I said, “Mike.  Once you learn how to use the internet properly you will have great conversations with the people you talk to on the phone.  You will enjoy them.”

“Don’t ever try to convince anyone at anytime.  Sometimes I don’t even tell people what business I am in because they are not a fit.  Once you have people calling you because they are already interested in your business or they are just interested in working with you, the conversations are great.”

“Ah hah” says Mike. 

“I totally get that you don’t want to talk to your friends and family.  Personally I mention it to them once because I believe in what I am doing but if they show no interest, I don’t care. It’s not my main source for team members or customers.” 

What did I learn

Many people have the misconception that once you learn online marketing for your network marketing business you don’t have to talk to people.  Hopefully that is not the case.  Talk to more!  This is a people business regardless of your marketing savvy. 

Plus, who the heck wants to never have to talk to people.  (In fact, 702.992.0825 is my number.  If you genuinely care about people, want to brainstorm, or share ideas, call me.)  Mike is actually a friendly guy that likes people and people like him.  I think he was just expressing the same feelings that most people have.  They don’t want to have to bug family and friends again.  They don’t want to have to cold call again. 

Here is the breakthrough for everyone. 

Learn new skills.  Teach it to others.  Help them.  Give value.  Care about others…..succeed!

I like the exchanges in the conversation. I found the title a bit confusing.

Thanks for the feedback Lottie. The title was meant to create curiosity based on the story but not confusion so let me clear it up.

Mike, like so many people I’ve come across, think that relationship marketing means face to face marketing only. They think learning the internet will mean they don’t have to deal with people on a personal level. I explained to Mike that he will likely deal with people more but it will be more enjoyable.
